Thomas Mather

Thomas was born on September 26th, 1795 in Chowbent and his baptism took place on January 31st, 1796 at Newbent Chapel (Presbyterian).¹

Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Martha (Matty) Higginson. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Mary Mather. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, Henry, Mary and Beatrice. He was the second oldest of the five children.

General Notes
- In 1811, Thomas from Chowbent, b.1795, aged 16, was with the 33rd Foot Soldiers, in Canada (see Canada, British Regimental Registers of Service)
  
  Beatirce (sister) is a unique name at these time. She married at Farnworth in 1824. It follows therefore, the marriages of Thomas (1820) and James (1829) are also at Farnworth. However, the Thomas that married in 1820 was a Gardener, so perhaps he is an older semi-retired person.
  
  Thomas and Catherine Lea did NOT move to Windle and have a son Thomas in 1830. That was another couple who also had a daughter Mary in 1821, at Tontine Wesleyan.
  
  Thomas and Catharine do not appear to have had any children. Perhaps they relocated after marriage, although the 1851 death for Catharine at Leigh appears to be a match.
