Sarah was born in 1831 in Bolton.1  Sarah's father was James Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Cook. She had two brothers and a sister, named Isaac, John and Alice.  She was the oldest of the four children.

‌Sarah and John were married in a religious ceremony on November 26th, 1860 in Wigan.3   They had a son named Matthew.
