Samuel was born on September 25th, 1788 in Bolton and his baptism took place on October 30th, 1788 at St. George (Little Bolton).1  Samuel's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Martha Enwistle.  His paternal grandparents were Zacharias Mather and Sarah Brooks. He had a brother and two sisters, named Zacharias, Hannah and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the four known children.  He died at the age of 59 in March 1848 in Bolton.2
