Ralph was born on June 24th, 1885 in Blackrod and his baptism took place on August 2nd, 1885 at St. Katherine (B'rod).1  Ralph's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Margaret Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Leyland and Ellen Hope. He had two brothers and a sister, named James, John and Ann. He had an adopted brother named William. He had a half-sister named Ellen.
