James was born in 1879 in Blackrod.1   James' father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Margaret Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Leyland and Ellen Hope. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Ralph and Ann. He had an adopted brother named William. He had a half-sister named Ellen.
