Mary was born in 1874 in Billinge.¹ Mary's father was John Mather and her mother was Annie Taylor. Her paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Mary Singleton. She had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Peter and Alice. She was the oldest of the four known children.
