Martha was born in December 1804 in Atherton and her baptism took place on December 16th, 1804 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1 2  Martha's father was John Mather and her mother was Betty Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Ann Wainright.

‌Martha and Henry were married in a religious ceremony on August 28th, 1848 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).4   They had two adopted sons and an adopted daughter, named Richard, Thomas and Sarah.  There are possibly more children.
