Martha was born in 1850 in Over Darwen.¹ Martha's father was William Mather and her mother was Ellen Watson. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Phoebe (Feby) Duxbury. She had two sisters named Phoebe and Rachael. She was the oldest of the three known children.
