Joseph was born in March 1851 in Chesterfield.1  Joseph's father was George Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Walker. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Mary.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had three half-sisters named Emily, Elizabeth and Eliza.
