Joseph was born in 1887 in Philadelphia. Joseph's father was James A Mather and his mother was Mary McLaughlin. His paternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Sarah Smith. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, James, George, Harry and Grace. He was the third youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 5 on May 12th, 1892 in Philadelphia.¹
