John's father was William Mather and his mother was Ellen Watson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Phoebe (Feby) Duxbury. He had six sisters named Martha, Phoebe, Betsy, Rachel, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 2 in December 1867 in Over Darwen.  He was buried on December 14th, 1867 in Darwen.
