John was born in December 1859 in St. Helens.1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Mary Mather.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Welch. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the four known children. He had three half-brothers named Henry, William and Peter.
