John was born on June 22nd, 1840 in Pendleton and his baptism took place on August 7th, 1840 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles).1 2  John's father was William Mather and his mother was Amelia Tideswell.  His paternal grandparents were Colin (Cast Iron) Mather and Hannah. He had three brothers and a sister, named Colin, William, Amy and Alice.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 70 in 1910.
