James was born in December 1848 in Upholland.1  James' father was Richard Mather and his mother was Mary Heyes. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, Samuel, Sarah, Catherine, Jane and Alice.  He died at 6 months old in June 1849 in Wigan.2
