James was born on July 21st, 1812 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on September 6th, 1812 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Esther Barlow.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Scholes. He had a brother and a sister, named Samuel and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
