Harriet was born in 1831 in Little Hulton.1  Harriet's father was James Thornley (Mather) and her mother was Margaret (Peggy) Mather.  Her paternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley. She had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, Ellis, Betty and Caroline.  She was the youngest of the six children.
