Gertrude's father was Alfred Mather and her mother was Emma Beswick.  Her paternal grandparents were David Mather and Esther Heaton. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry, William, Alfred, Joseph, Mary and Esther.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.  She died at the age of 79 in December 1972 in Bolton.²
