Elizabeth's father was James Mather and her mother was Jane Taylor. Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Warburton. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Mary and Martha. She was the second oldest of the five children. She died in 1874 in Elton.¹
