Dorothy was born in December 1879 in Salford.1  Dorothy's father was Sir William Mather and her mother was Emma Jane Watson.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Amelia Tideswell. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Colin, Grace, William, Norman, Loris, Alice, Florence and Marjorie.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
