Betty, known as Elizabeth, was born in March 1840 in Golborne.1  Elizabeth's father was John Mather and his mother was Ellen Birchall. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, John, Harriet, Ellen and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
