Alfred was born in June 1877 in Bolton.1  Alfred's father was Robert Wolstencroft Mather and his mother was Nancy Fogg.  His paternal grandparents were Simon Mather and Jane Wolstencroft. He had a brother named John.  He was the younger of the two known children.
