John was born on August 12th, 1716 in Turton and his baptism took place on August 21st, 1716 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  John's father was James Knowles and his mother was Agnes Bertwistle. He had a brother and four sisters, named Benjamin, Jane, Elizabeth, Alice and Agnes.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
