Elizabeth's father was John Knowles and her mother was Jane Abbott. Her paternal grandparents were Michael Knowles and Mary Pomfret; her maternal grandparents were Henry Abbott and Elizabeth (Betty) Edmundson.

- Daughter of John Knowles and Jane Abbot. The third of 10 children.
  
  In 1871, Elizabeth (8) was with her parents John and Jane (28 & 29), 5 siblings and her cousin Joseph Knowles (9). The family wee from Blackburn and had moved to Higher Booths around 1866.
  
  In 1881, John and Matilda Knowles (38 & 40) were at Higher Booths with 9 children including Elizabeth (18 and single).
