George was born on January 2nd, 1835 in Malpas and his baptism took place there on January 2nd, 1835.1  George's father was George Johnson and his mother was Anne Battarbee.  His maternal grandparents were George Batarbee and Mary Richards. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Alice and Emma.  He was the oldest of the four children.
