Elsie's father was Robert Hopley and her mother was Annie Woodcock. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Beddow Hopley and Agnes Ann Lloyd. She had a brother and two sisters, named Robert, Agnes and Dorothy. She was the youngest of the four children. She died at the age of 87 in 1999.
