Thomas' father was Thomas Holt and his mother was Hannah Exton. His paternal grandparents were William Holt and Jane Marsh. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Exton, Marshall, Nancy and Sarah. He was the fourth oldest of the five children. He died as an infant at 3 months old in December 1862 in Little Bolton.¹
