Thomas was born in 1815 in Turton and his baptism took place on October 1st, 1815 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Thomas' father was Benjamin Holt and his mother was Jane Kay.  His paternal grandparents were Edmund Holt and Ellen Hamers. He had a brother and two sisters, named Edmund, Jane and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
