John was born in 1768 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on May 3rd, 1768 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  John's father was Ralph Holt and his mother was Elizabeth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Joanna Hilton. He had a brother and two sisters, named James, Hannah and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the four known children.
