James' father was Edmund Holt and his mother was Mary Reynolds.  His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Holt and Jane Kay. He had a brother and two sisters, named William, Mary and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Elizabeth.  He died as an infant at 10 months old in January 1845 in Turton.¹
