Benjamin was born in 1837 in Cliviger & Mereclough.1  Benjamin's father was James Hargreaves and his mother was Mary Slater.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Hargreaves and Jane (Jenny) Whitaker; his maternal grandparents were <unknown> and Elizabeth (Betty) Slater. He had four brothers and six sisters, named John, William, Thomas, Eliza, Jane, Ann, Susannah, Sarah, Mary and Matilda.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
