Alice was born in June 1839 in Bolton and her baptism took place on July 14th, 1839 at St. Peter's (Bolton). Alice's father was Andrew Hamer and her mother was Sarah Jane Stott.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Hamer and Mary Briggs; her maternal grandparents were Edward Stott and Mary Entwistle. She had two brothers and a sister, named Ted, Michael and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the four children.
