John's father was Nathan Griffiths and his mother was Margaret Richards.  His maternal grandparents were John Richards and Elizabeth. He had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Nathan and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the four known children.  He died at the age of 83 in 1907.

‌John and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on March 20th, 1849 in Denbighshire.²
