William's father was William Greenhalgh and his mother was Hannah Booth.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Greenhalgh and Eleanor (Ellen) Walmsley; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Booth and Ann Pinnington. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, Nephi, Jacob and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Robert, John, Ezekiel, Joseph, Ellen, Mary and Mary.
