Joseph was born in June 1868 in Huyton.¹

Joseph's father was Thomas Gore and his mother was Ellen Jeffs Lusty. His paternal grandparents were William Gore and Susannah Webster. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, George, Susannah, Ellen and Margaret. He was the third youngest of the seven children.
