Ellen was born in September 1862 in Huyton.¹

Ellen's father was Thomas Gore and her mother was Ellen Jeffs Lusty. Her paternal grandparents were William Gore and Susannah Webster. She had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Joseph, John, George, Susannah and Margaret. She was the third oldest of the seven children.
