Margaret's father was Cuthbert Gibson and her mother was Nancy Mercer.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Gibson and Margaret (Peggy) Giles. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Thomas, Alice, Ann and Maria.  She was the third youngest of the six known children.
