Martha was born in 1833 in Turton.1  Martha's father was Ralph Entwistle and her mother was Catherine Thompson. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Peter, Ralph, Thomas, Ann, Jane, Alice, Frances and Ellen.  She was the youngest of the nine known children. She had a half-brother named John.
