Walter's father was Walter Dooley (Doxey) and his mother was Rebecca Breeze. His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Mary Ann Dooley; his maternal grandparents were John Breeze and Emma Breeze. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Charles, Thomas, Mary, Nora, Edna and Ivy. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
