James' father was Wilhelm (William) Heinrich Dittmer and his mother was Margaret (Maggie) Ann Houghton. His paternal grandparents were Johann (Chris) Heinrich Christoph Dittmer and Katharina (Margaret) Margretha Magdalena Heuer. He had a sister named Mary. He was the older of the two children. He died at 3 months old in November 1901 in Prescot. His burial was on November 5th, 1901 in St. Thomas (Eccleston).²¹
