Edward's father was Samuel Dawson and his mother was Mary Rhodes. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Samuel, James, Elizabeth, Mary, Ann, Margaret, Ellen, Sarah and Eliza.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
