John's father was John Davies and his mother was Emily Hale.  His maternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Louisa Smith. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, Elizabeth, James and Lillie.  He was the third oldest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Emily.  He died at the age of 25 in September 1905 in Birkenhead.²
