John's father was Henry Cunliffe and his mother was Sarah Ingham.  His paternal grandparents were James Cunliffe and Sarah Lord. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named James, Lord, John, John, James, Henry, Joseph, Thomas, Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Ann and Mary.  He was the sixth oldest of the fourteen children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1852 in Accrington.²
