Hannah was born in December 1841 in Turton and her baptism took place on January 30th, 1842 at St. Laurence (Chorley).1 2  Hannah's father was James Cunliffe and her mother was Sarah Jackson. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Richard, James, Elizabeth, Margaret, Sarah, Frances and Mary. She had an adopted sister named Sarah.
