John's father was Marinus Marion Bush and his mother was Mary (Marrian) Ann Arthur. His maternal grandparents were Edward James Arthur and Catherine Bennett. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Marinus, Kay, Gladys, Mary and Loa. He was the fourth oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 92 on September 18th, 2004 in Idaho (ID).¹
