Mary was born in September 1868 in Delph.1  Mary's father was Benjamin Buckley and her mother was Ann Buckley.  Her paternal grandparents were Edmund Buckley and Mary Ann Richardson; her maternal grandparents were Philip Buckley and Joanna (Nanny) Brierley. She had five brothers and a sister, named Edmund, Henry, Philip, William, Esther and Hannah.  She was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
