Joseph was born in October 1754 in Delph and his baptism took place on October 7th, 1754 at St. Chad (Saddleworth).1  Joseph's father was James Buckley Snr and his mother was Elisabeth (Betty) Cresswell. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, James, John, William, Betty, Hannah and Anne.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
