John's father was Philip Buckley and his mother was Joanna (Nanny) Brierley. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Ann, Betty and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the five children.

‌John and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony on May 29th, 1860 in Friarmere.²
