James was born in 1750 in Saddleworth and his baptism took place on September 23rd, 1750 at St. Marys (Oldham).1  James' father was William Buckley and his mother was Mary Shaw (Dronsfield).  His paternal grandparents were James Buckley Jnr and Sarah Cooper. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, John, Ben and Betty.  He was the second oldest of the five known children.
