James' father was William Buckley and his mother was Mary Shaw (Dronsfield). His paternal grandparents were James Buckley Jnr and Sarah Cooper. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, John, Ben and Betty. He was the oldest of the five known children. He died about 1747 in Saddleworth.
