Ellen was born in 1838 in Wybunbury.¹ Ellen's father was Thomas Brereton and her mother was Fanny (Frances) Forster. Her paternal grandparents were John Brereton and Mary Brassington. She had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Charlotte, Fanny and Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the five children.
